The Phantom Agony has always been a masterpiece, to me. However, lately I have come to notice that it lacks a certain finesse that the later albums have. Simone sounds very amateurish. In terms of songwriting, I love this album the best, though.
Consign To Oblivion has some great songs, but not-so-great flow. Overall, the journey could be a lot smoother. I like the bombast and Simone's vocals, I just miss the dark beauty of The Phantom Agony.
I must be the only weirdo who doesn't care for the new album, The Divine Conspiracy. It is the only Epica album where there are songs I skip every time. I really dislike the title track. But Simone is greatly improved vocally, so I like it for that reason, I guess.
In other words, TPA for songwriting, CTO for accessibility, and TDC for vocals.
